Happy Lunar New Year! Gong Hay Fat Choy!

Here’s to the Year of the Ox, a more happy and healthy 2021 🍊 🥬 🎋 🧧 🎉 🥟 🍜 🐟 🐮

I’ve been making glutinous rice balls for the fam – teamed up with my mom yesterday on New Year’s Eve to make a savory version of tong yuen / tang yuan, which is a symbol of togetherness. The ones we made were plain and unfilled. All I did was add some salt and oil to the dough.

I’m really looking forward to tomorrow’s feast with the entire pod which includes my auntie. So glad we have these family meals. It’s nice to be together during these pandemic times.

Hopefully, we’ll be able to celebrate with everybody next year.

That Lunar New Year Candy Tray…

is actually called a tray of togetherness. But, I only ever knew it as that candy tray my mom would bust out and fill with traditional and more fun candies during Lunar New Year. And now that I have a kid of my own, I want to have one of my own to bust out as well.

And did you know that it’s near impossible to find one to order online – even Amazon came up empty.

In the end, I did get one. My mom was kind enough to gift me with her older tray and I was more than happy to take it.

In celebration, I illustrated a candy tray and put my spin on it. It’s called “Have a Sweet New Year.” Greeting cards and more are now available to order in my shop.

I haven’t had this much fun drawing in a very long time. It wasn’t a struggle. Usually, I’m fighting with myself every step of the way – from idea, execution to the actual drawing & coloring.

I had fun this time and blocked out all the noise of being super self critical and just drew. I feel like this is a new beginning for me. I’m exploring subject matter that’s personal to me and putting my spin on it.
